Huddersfield Town have won the richest match in football and promotion to the Premier League, downing Reading 4-3 in a penalty shooutout in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

After a cagey 120 minutes, ending in a 0-0 stalemate, Town won the battle of wits from the penalty spot, although it was them who blinked first.

Michael Hefele spurned his spot kick, but Liam Moore and Jordan Obita missed the Royals’ fourth and fifth kicks, while Nahki Wells, Christopher Schindler and Mooy responded to their lapse by tucking away their strikes.

Huddersfield’s promotion takes them to the Premier League for the first time ever, and gives them a taste of top flight football for the first time since 1972.

The Terriers also take home a cool £170 million. They join Brighton and Newcastle United as 2016-17’s promoted sides.

And while it was ecstasy for them, Reading endured heartache.
