A nine man Chelsea side looked anything but defending Premier League champions in a 3-2 defeat against Burnley on Saturday night.

Anticipation was high around Stamford Bridge on the opening day of 2017-18, yet things turned sour quickly as Gary Cahill was shown a straight red for an apparent lunging tackle. Sam Vokes would then head home the opening goal and Antonio Conte’s defence – which looked so unstoppable last season – were ravaged by a stunning Stephen Ward curler and a second from Vokes before half-time.

Although the Blues responded positively after the break and found a lifeline with Alvaro Morata’s first Premier League goal, Cesc Fabregas’ dismissal for two yellow cards largely ended any hopes of a comeback – despite a classy finish from David Luiz.
