An American reporter has been left red-faced after posing a, well, let’s say, confusing question to new Chicago Fire signing Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Having signed for the MLS club a fortnight ago, the Germany legend was officially unveiled as a designated player with a press conference on Wednesday.
Here’s how the embarrassing sequence of events unfolded:
“With your addition to this team, is it a fair expectation to see a clear pathway towards a World Cup competition come out of Chicago?” the journalist asked.
“I didn’t hear, could you hear?” Schweinsteiger responded, directing his question to club officials.
“He’s referring to the World Club Cup,” one official responded.
“Let me rephrase… do you expect now that you’re here Bastian, that World Cup goal for Chicago Fire is a realistic expectation?” the journalist asked again.
“So the World Club Cup?” replied an official.
“Well not the World Cup. We as a club don’t play for the World Cup (official), but we’ll adjust it to the MLS Cup. Do you think MLS Cup is a realistic expectation?” said another, posing an (again) rephrased question to Schweinsteiger.
“But I hope, once with the vision of national silverware that this club comes to a World Cup as you said,” Schweinsteiger jokingly replied.
