Melbourne Victory have announced the arrival of German defender Georg Niedermeier on a one-year deal, subject to a medical, but he may not be the only man to arrive at the club.

Neidermeier is set to bring a wealth of experience to the Victory backline with the 32-year-old having previously competed in the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League.

Having graduated through the Bayern Munich youth academy system, Neidermeier went onto make 182 appearances for VfB Stuttgart across season playing alongside former Victory defender Matthieu Delpierre.

Manager Kevin Muscat expressed his delight at the signing, following Victory’s announcement.

“Georg has great defensive qualities and will play an important role in leading our backline this season,” Muscat said.

“His big game experience in the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League and Europa League will be extremely valuable.

“While Georg is certainly important addition, we are working hard to continue to add to the overall quality of the squad.”

Fairfax Media is reporting that the club is also leading the chase to sign recently retired Japanese international Keisuke Honda as well as announce Nick Ansell’s return to the club after a one-year spell in Portugal with CD Tondela.

Neidermeier is set to arrive in Melbourne next week where he will undergo a medical and finalise his move.
