A stoic Chelsea held Barcelona to a 1-1 draw, while Bayern Munich dismantled a 10-man Beşiktaş as the Champions League round of 16 continued on Wednesday.
It was clear from the opening whistle that Antonio Conte’s players were focused on producing a giant-killing performance, with the Blaugrana’s dominance in possession counting for little during the first half.
After hitting both sides of the goal frame in the early stages, Willian provided Chelsea with an advantage just after the hour mark and it seemed as though a memorable upset was unfolding in London.
However, as is so often the case, Lionel Messi would refuse to accept defeat, and a poor defensive pass from Andreas Christensen saw the Argentine superstar left with an easy finish to equalise.
At the Allianz Area meanwhile, any plans that Beşiktaş would have had for a similar upset were quickly dashed as defender Domagoj Vida was shown a red card in just the 16th minute.
Both Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski would register braces as their Turkish opposition collapsed following the dismissal, with Kingsley Coman also finding the net in what was ultimately a 5-0 hammering by the Bundesliga champions.
