Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League in stunning fashion following a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla on Wednesday.
Many observers thought it was a certainty that the Red Devils would progress on their own turf, however, some quizzical decisions from Jose Mourinho prevented his side from exerting their full attacking strength.
Although the La Liga outfit controlled momentum and possession throughout the 90 minutes, it was not until Wissam Ben Yedder’s introduction in the latter stages that the deadlock was broken, striking the ball past David De Gea in the 74th minute then adding a second soon after to shock the United faithful.
While Romelu Lukaku was able to reduce the deficit, there was little way back in the tie for Manchester.
It was an equally nervous scene for AS Roma as they hosted Shakhtar Donetsk, needing to turn around a 2-1 defeat from the first leg meeting. The Giallorossi would indeed do just enough to book a quarter-final berth, with a narrow 1-0 win sending them through on away goals.
Striker Edin Dzeko hit the net in the second half, with Shakhtar defender Ivan Ordets also receiving a red card.
