Player Ratings: Sydney FC 2 Newcastle Jets 1 – Arnold’s men bounce back in pouring rain

Sydney returned to winning ways with a 2-1 defeat of Newcastle in pouring rain at Allianz Stadium.

Sydney FC

Andrew Redmayne – 5: A quiet night, however, poor positioning led to Dimtri Petratos’ goal.

Paulo Retre – 4.5: Saw plenty of possession down the right side, but he was wasteful and failed to create any good chances

Alex Wilkinson – 6.5: Solid as usual, highlighted by his effort to deny Andrew Nabbout a potential equaliser.

Jordy Buijs – 6: Got involved in the attacks when the Sky Blues had all the possession. Also did well in defence as Newcastle grew into the match.

Michael Zullo – 6: The more effective of the two fullbacks and played in some dangerous balls

Josh Brillante – 6.5: Did well to help take control in the middle of the park and he looked dangerous when joining the attacks

Alex Brosque – 5: A quiet game in his milestone match, played in a couple of good balls and had a half chance that was shut down, but could not make these count.

Brandon O’Neill – 6: Worked hard in the middle of the park to help his side dominate the first hour of the match.

David Carney – 5.5: Like Brosque, was not as influential as usual. Put in a good 90 minute shift with a couple of chances

Bobo – 7: Created the opening goal off his own boot with a wonderful run and pass to Ninkovic. Also scored after a gift from Jack Duncan.

Milos Ninkovic – 6.5: Found the net within five minutes and was shift across the park, without being spectacular

Seb Ryall – 4.5: Brought on with 30 minutes to go, however, he did not add anything compared to what Retre provided.

Adrian Mierzejewski – 5: Like his fellow subs, could not help Sydney shift the game back into his side’s favour.

Charles Lokolingoy – 4.5: Plenty of energy on debut, but he did not really make anything of note in his 20 minute spell.

Newcastle Jets

Jack Duncan – 6: Kept Newcastle in the match with a string of big saves. Could do nothing to stop Ninkovic’s strike from going in despite getting a hand to it, however, undid all the hard work with a spilled shot into the path of Bobo.

Daniel Georgievski – 5: Limited impact overall. Could not utilise his main strengths to push forward and create anything for the Jets.

Nigel Boogaard – 5.5: Solid at the back despite the shaky start. Looked dangerous in attacking set pieces

Nikolai Topor-Stanley – 5.5: Along with his other defenders, failed to shut down Ninkovic for the opening goal in the first five minutes. Was solid for the rest of the game.

Ivan Vujica – 5: Got a better footing into the game during the second half.

Ben Kantarovski – 4.5: Along with Vujica should have done better to shut down Bobos run for the goal. Should have scored a goal of his own but butchered a golden opportunity.

Steven Ugarkovic – 5: Overpowered in the middle of the park for the first part of the match, did well to try and work his way back into contention

Dimitri Petratos – 6.5: Limited chances for much of the game, however, his goal helped give the Jets a chance.

Joe Champness – 6: The most likely visiting player to score, looked dangerous with a half chance early, but was forced off after head knock

Jason Hoffman – 4: Looked lost playing in the forward third, failing to make any real impact on the wing.

Andrew Nabbout – 4.5: played central to fill the boots of Roy O’Donovan. Had one half chance, but ultimately he was disappointing.

Nick Cowburn – 5: Substituted on at half-time. Solid defensively and had a couple of runs into the box that almost created a goal.

Johnny Koutroumbis – N/A
