Chris Ikonomidis shun as Western Sydney Wanderers secured a hugely important 3-0 win over finals-chasing rivals Brisbane Roar at ANZ Stadium on Saturday evening.
Western Sydney Wanderers
Vedran Janjetovic – 7: The less tested of the two glovemen, but made smart saves on the rare occasion he was called upon.
Josh Risdon – 7.5: Linked up well with Ikonomidis and saw plenty of the ball in forward areas. Good game.
Brendan Hamill – 7.5: Assumed the armband and led a tight ship at the back. Had much more to do in the dying stages.
Jack Clisby – 7: Looked a little lost early in what is, at best, a secondary position but settled as proceedings wore on and ultimately had a good shift. Played an important release that started the play leading to Ikonomidis’ goal.
Raul Llorente – 8: Offered some good overlap and linked well with Cejudo. Got the assist for the third.
Keanu Baccus – 7.5: Looking increasingly confident as a midfield anchor. Was not afraid to spray some long balls and carry it further up the field.
Kearyn Baccus – 8.5: Played an important role without possession, harassing Brisbane’s ball carriers. Was terrific on the ball too.
Marcelo Carrusca – 7.5: Did enough by way of holding the ball to win the foul off Matt McKay. Dinked a perfect ball that picked apart Hingert and Pepper for 2-0.
Chris Ikonomidis – 9: Very lively and was the first link in the chain through midfield as Riera doubled the lead. Had Franjic well beaten and was rewarded with a goal. Absolutely oozed confidence in a dominant display.
Alvaro Cejudo – 8.5: Recovered from an early knock and had a terrific evening. A pinpoint delivery picked out Riera and was dangerous throughout, showcasing skill and trickery.
Oriol Riera – 8.5: A rocket header produced the first goal of the game, and doubled his money with another 10 minutes later. Should really have had a hat-trick.
Brendon Santalab – N/A: Not able to make a telling contribution in his 13 minutes.
Josh Sotirio – N/A: No real involvement.
Steve Lustica – N/A: Added fresh legs in midfield.
Jamie Young – 6.5: Made a stunning save to deny Riera but was unlucky that in the end, it made little difference in a barrage of forward thrusts. Might have done more to deny the first one.
Jack Hingert – 4: Cejudo and Llorente made sure his night was a difficult one. Pinned back most of the time and was not able to add much in attack. Did prevent Riera’s hat-trick though.
Daniel Bowles – 5: Tried hard but was overwhelmed by the rampant Wanderers.
Jacob Pepper – 5: Made a ninth-minute intervention to prevent a shot that, based on replays, Young may have had covered regardless but he was not to be sure. Other than that, like Bowles, faced an onslaught of attacks and struggled to handle it.
Ivan Franjic – 3.5: Beaten all ends up by Ikonomidis. Put out of his misery with 15 minutes left
Thomas Kristensen – 6: The outlet when Brisbane had the ball, but much of the time, Kearyn Baccus was right in his grill. Western Sydney’s crisp ball movement made breaking up the play a challenge.
Matt McKay – 5: Conceded something of a dead-end foul on Carrusca which led to the opening goal. Poor thing to do as a leader in a big game.
Eric Bautheac – 5.5: Got into some decent areas but made some uncharacteristically sloppy errors when push came to shove.
Fahid Ben Khalfallah – 5.5: Worked hard but his influence was limited.
Henrique – 5.5: Got his eyes up but was unable to pack a punch. First cab off the rank in terms of subs.
Massimo Maccarone – 5.5: Fluffed one tremendous chance on 18 minutes that should be routine for a striker of his calibre. Grew into the game after a quiet opening half and was presented with some half chances. Correctly denied a goal by VAR.
Brett Holman – 4: Offered a spark off the bench but could not be the difference. Was standing offside in the leadup to Maccarone’s disallowed goal.
Corey Gameiro – N/A: No real influence.
Connor O’Toole – N/A: Had to deal with Ikonomidis in the latter stages.
